ANGLO-RUSSIAN CENTRE IN NORTH EAST ENGLAND

Learn the Russian alphabet
Learning the Russian alphabet is easy, and should take you about half an hour. Once you’ve learnt its 33 letters, you will be able to read Russian, as most words are pronounced exactly as they are written (unlike in English sometimes!). The Russian alphabet’s 33 letters (and English equivalents) are:
А Б В Г Д Е Ё Ж З И Й К Л М Н О П Р С Т У Ф Х Ц Ч Ш Щ Ъ Ы Ь Э Ю Я

A B V G D Ye Yo Zh Z Ee Y K L M N O P R S T Oo F Kh Ts Ch Sh Shch – i – Eh Yu Ya
To help you learn the alphabet, I’ve divided the letters into four groups:

  1. Six letters that are the same as in English;

  2. Six letters that are the same as in English, but pronounced differently;

  3. Eight letters that look different but are pronounced the same; and

  4. Thirteen letters that are completely different

^ Silent letters Ь and Ъ
There are two silent letters in the Russian alphabet: the soft sign ь and the hard sign ъ.

Think of the difference between the words “putt” (quite a hard t sound) and “put” (softer) and you will get an idea of what the soft sign does. The soft sign is important as it can distinguish meaning. For example, the word "брат" (“brat”) means "brother", while the word "брать" (“bratch”) means "to take".
The hard sign just indicates a slight pause. It comes between a prefix and the main part of a word before the vowels е (ye), ё (yo), я (ya), and ю (yu). For example: объём (“ob’yem”) meaning “volume”, and отъезд (“ot’yezd”) meaning “departure”.
The letter Й
A bit like a ‘y’, the Russian letter й usually precedes or follows a vowel as in the word "английский" (“angliyskiy” meaning “English”. It only comes at the start of a word if of foreign origin, for example, йогурт (yogurt), йога (yoga).
The letter Ы
The Russian letter Ы is a very short ‘i’ sound. Say ‘pit’ and ‘peet’, then make the ‘i’ in ‘pit’ even shorter. It never starts a word, but is often used to make a word plural, so you will see it a lot: дым (“dimm”) meaning “smoke”, or мосты (“mosti’”) meaning “bridges”.

So there we are. Hope you enjoyed your half-hour Russian alphabet lesson! AS 06/12
